A client came into my office with severe shoulder and knee pain. One physician suggested immediate knee surgery. Another said wait. The shoulder had a previous injury and surgery. I worked with the client to release almost all the pain and restore range of motion. Before the next appointment, the pain had returned to the shoulder. I released trigger points and fascial restrictions. The strength and range of motion was restored. The pain was gone.
We were both disappointed that the pain returned. As I worked on the shoulder, we explored the stress in her life. She had an upcoming move planned to a location that had not been determined. She was also thinking about a job change, too. She also felt powerless and angry about a financial situation. I used some heart centered therapy techniques to help her release the associated anger. After the anger was completely vanquished, I asked her to move her arm. All the pain was gone. The range of motion and strength were restored. How can this be related?
When we are under stress (anger, powerlessness, grief) our body holds on to everything. It’s afraid to let go because of the great uncertainty facing it. We notice this as inflammation or even extra fat. As the fear and stress dissipate, the inflammation leaves. When the inflammation leave we feel well and become pain free.
Sounds too simple? Our bodies accurately reflect our innermost feelings. They do this so we can notice and bring things back in balance. Pain is simply a message. It really can be that easy.
